海子原名查海生，生于1964年3月24日，在农村长大。1979年15岁时考入北京大学法律系，大学期间开始诗歌创作。1983年自北大毕业后分配至北京中国政法大学哲学教研室工作。1989年3月26日在山海关卧轨自杀，年仅25岁。

　 海子1982年开始诗歌创作，当时与西川、骆一禾被称为“北大三诗人”。1984年创作成名作《亚洲铜》和《阿尔的太阳》，第一次使用“海子”作为笔名。从1982年至1989年不到7年的时间里，海子创造了大量的作品，结集出版了《土地》、《海子、骆一禾作品集》、《海子的诗》、《海子诗全编》等。其主要作品有：二百五十余首优秀抒情短诗，其中最著名的一首为《面朝大海，春暖花开》；《太阳七部书》，即诗剧《太阳》、诗剧《断头篇》、诗剧《但是水，水》、长诗《土地篇》、第一合唱剧《弥赛亚》、仪式和祭祀剧《弑》、诗体小说《你是父亲的好女儿》。

   海子说：“我的诗歌理想是在中国成就一种伟大的集体的诗。我不想成为一个抒情诗人、或一位戏剧诗人，甚至不想成为一名史诗诗人，我只想融合中国的行动成就一种民族和人类的结合，诗和真理合一的大诗。”

   海子被认为是“一个诗歌时代的象征”和“我们祖国给世界文学奉献的一位具有世界眼光的诗人之一。”

   Haizi,whose original name was Zha Haisheng,was born on March 24th,1964.He grew in the countryside.In 1979,at the age of fifteen,Haizi went to Peking University and majored in law.He began to create poems in this period.After graduation in 1983,Haizi was distributed to China University of Political Science and Law and worked in the teaching and research section in philosophy. On March 26th ,1989,Haizi put an end to his life by lying on the rail in the Shanghai Pass,only when he was 25 years old.
   Haizi started to write poems in 1982.At that time,Xichuan ,Luo Yihe and Haizi were called “ Three Poets of Peking University.” In 1984,he wrote his first famous poem Asia Copper and The Sun of A’r,and used “Haizi” for the first time as his pen name.From 1982 to 1989,in this period of less than 7 years, Haizi created many works and published many such as The Land,The Collection of Works of Haizi and Luo Yihe,The Poetry of Haizi, The Complete Poetical Works of Haizi and so on.His chief works include:more than 250 excellent lyrics,among which the most well-known one is Facing the Sea with Spring Blossoms;The Sun•Seven Books (it includes poetic drama The Sun,Decapitation,But Water,Water,and long poem The Land,the first choral play Messiah,the liturgical play Murder, the poetic novel You Are The Father’s Good Daughter.)
   Haizi once said,“my ideal of poetry is to create a type of great and collective poem. I don’t want to be a lyricist or a drama poet, not even an epic poet. I just want to merge Chinese actions into this great poem,which combines nation human beings,poetry and truth.”
   Haizi,is regarded as “a symbol of a poetic epoch” and “one of those poets who have a world view and whom our motherland devotes to the world literature.
